Floating offshore wind turbines in Portugal generate 25MW of green electricity annually and prevent the emission of 33,000 tonnes of CO2/year

Floating wind turbines, also known as marine wind turbines, offer numerous advantages. Positioned farther from the coastline, they capitalize on stronger and more consistent winds compared to their land-based counterparts. Consequently, due to their enhanced power output, floating wind turbines can generate up to twice as much energy as onshore turbines. However, installing these “offshore” wind farms in waters too deep for fixed-foundation turbines poses a challenge. ENGIE collaborated with EDP Renewables, Repsol, and Principle Power to develop WindFloat Atlantic, leveraging innovative technology for harnessing wind power at depths exceeding 40 meters in Portugal.

Since April 2022, this farm has been supplying 40% of Scotland’s electricity needs. The project was developed through collaboration between Ocean Winds, a joint venture between ENGIE and EDP Renewables (EDPR), along with Diamond Green Limited and CTG.
