ENGIE has reinforced its long‑term presence in Oman with the signing of new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the Barka 3 and Sohar 2 independent power plants. Signed with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), the agreements extend both assets for an additional 15 years from 1 April 2028, securing the longest PPA extension achieved to date in Oman and supporting the continued operation of two critical assets within the country’s electricity system.
With these extensions, ENGIE concludes the current cycle of legacy asset renewals in the Sultanate. The company has now secured extensions for all key assets in Oman, following Barka 2 (9 years), Sohar 1 (9 years) and Rusail (6 years) further consolidating its strategic role in the country’s power sector.
Barka 3 and Sohar 2 are CCGT plants, each with a generation capacity of approximately 744 MW. Since their commissioning in 2013, both plants have played an important role in supporting Oman’s electricity demand, providing reliable and flexible generation to maintain grid stability.
Flexible gas-fired generation continues to play an important role in evolving energy systems, particularly as countries integrate renewable energy. Barka 3 and Sohar 2 provide dispatchable capacity that complements intermittent renewable sources, supporting system reliability and operational flexibility.

With the new PPAs in place, Barka 3 and Sohar 2 will continue to play an important role in Oman’s power system for years to come, supporting reliable electricity supply and the continued development of the country’s energy infrastructure.
