ENGIE, in association with Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. Ltd., has signed a storage service agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company for the Al Khushaybi Battery Energy Storage System in Qassim Region; a 500 MW / 2,000 MWh standalone project, and the largest BESS in ENGIE‘s global portfolio to date.
Signed in the presence of HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy, Al Khushaybi is part of the Kingdom’s first group of independent battery storage projects; a first for Saudi Arabia and the wider region. The project will strengthen grid reliability and flexibility, and enable the integration of renewable energy toward the Kingdom’s target of an optimal generation mix of around 50% renewables by 2030.
The project represents foreign direct investment of approximately USD 220 million into the Kingdom, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s position as one of the world’s most attractive energy transition markets for international investors.
Al Khushaybi brings ENGIE’s global energy transition capabilities to Saudi Arabia: 4.7 GW of battery storage in operation worldwide, 57.7 GW of installed renewables and storage capacity across nearly 30 countries, and a target of 95 GW by 2030. During construction and operation, the project will create employment for Saudi nationals and transfer specialized battery storage expertise to local talent, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
