ENGIE Accelerates Global Storage Growth with its Largest Battery Project worldwide, in Saudi Arabia
  • ENGIE signs the 500 MW / 2,000 MWh Al Khushaybi Battery Energy Storage System in Saudi Arabia, its largest battery energy storage system globally to date.
  • The project will provide four hours of storage capacity, helping strengthen grid resilience and enable higher penetration of renewable energy in Saudi Arabia.
  • The agreement reinforces ENGIE’s long-term commitment to Saudi Arabia’s energy objectives and supports the Group’s ambition to be a global leader in low-carbon and flexible solutions.

ENGIE, together with Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. Ltd., has signed a Storage Service Agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company, the Principal Buyer, for the Al Khushaybi Battery Energy Storage System in Saudi Arabia’s Qassim Region.

With a capacity of 500 MW / 2,000 MWh, Al Khushaybi will be ENGIE’s largest battery energy storage system globally to date. The project forms part of the first group of independent battery storage projects in Saudi Arabia, supervised by the Ministry of Energy and developed under a build-own-operate model.

Designed to store electricity for up to four hours and dispatch it when needed, Al Khushaybi will enhance the flexibility, reliability and resilience of the Kingdom’s electricity system. By enabling greater integration of renewable energy into the grid, the project will support Saudi Arabia’s objective of achieving an optimal electricity generation mix with a growing share of renewable energy by 2030, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

The project reflects ENGIE’s strategy to combine renewable generation and flexibility solutions to build reliable, affordable and low-carbon energy systems.

ENGIE brings internationally proven capabilities across the battery storage value chain, from project development and financing to construction, operation and optimization. Leveraging extensive experience gained across North America, Australia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, the Group has established a global storage platform combining industrial expertise, operational excellence and strong local partnerships. This platform will support the successful delivery of Al Khushaybi

Naresh Baluja, Managing Director, ENGIE Middle East, said: “Battery energy storage is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of the energy systems of the future. As renewable generation grows, flexibility solutions such as Al Khushaybi are essential ensuring reliable, resilient and affordable electricity supply. This project is a major milestone for ENGIE, further strengthening our global storage platform. It demonstrates how we are applying our international expertise to support markets with ambitious energy transition goals and to deliver critical infrastructure at scale. This agreement also reflects Saudi Arabia’s strategic importance to ENGIE’s growth and our long-term commitment to the Kingdom.”

The project is expected to support local value creation, including employment opportunities for Saudi nationals during construction and operation, while helping develop specialised battery storage expertise and technical capabilities in the Kingdom, where ENGIE has been active for more than two decades.

As of 30 June 2026, ENGIE had 59.5 GW of installed renewable generation and storage capacity worldwide, with 6.4 GW under construction and a 122 GW project pipeline. ENGIE is targeting 95 GW of renewable and storage capacity by 2030.
